Giverny Tours

Giverny Weather by Month

Giverny weather is mild, with rain in every month and warm, sunny summers. The gardens open only from 1 April to 1 November, so the months that count are those seven. Here is what each month does to a day on Giverny tour, from Météo-France’s averages.

What the weather does to a visit here

A visit to Giverny is spent mostly outdoors. You walk the flower garden, loop round the pond and cross the green bridge. Only the house has a roof.

So rain and heat shape your day more than cold does. The gardens open every day of the season, rain or shine. On hot days you queue at the gate in the open.

The figures below are Météo-France’s 1991-2020 averages for Évreux-Huest, the nearest official station, 30 km from Giverny. They are averages, not a forecast.

The seasons, and which one you want

Each season suits a different visit. Pick the one that fits what you want to see.

Spring, April and May
Highs of 15 to 18 °C, rain on about nine days a month, and cool nights. The season opens on 1 April.
Summer, June to August
Highs of 22 to 24 °C, the most sun and the fewest rainy days. A dozen hot days in July and in August.
Autumn, September and October
September is mild and settled. October brings more rain and highs of about 16 °C.
Winter, November to March
Cool and wet, with frost most weeks. The house and gardens are closed after 1 November.

For the most sun, come from June to August. For milder days and thinner crowds, come in May or September and pack a waterproof.

Best time of day

The gates open at 10 am and last admission is at 5.30 pm. On a hot day, go early: the morning is cooler and the queue shorter. Keep the house for the warmest hour.

On a wet day, the rain often comes in spells. Start with the house, then walk the gardens when it eases. Bring shoes that grip on wet gravel.

What to wear in the gardens

Dress for a walk of two hours, on gravel paths, mostly outdoors. Here is what to bring in any month of the season:

Keep your bag within cabin size, 55 x 35 x 20 cm. The gardens have no luggage storage.

Questions about the weather

What is the weather like in Giverny in summer?
Mild to warm. Évreux, the nearest station, averages 24 °C by day in July and August and 13 °C at night. Rain falls on about eight days a month.
What is the rainiest month at Giverny?
December, with about 65 mm on 12 days, when the gardens are closed. In the season, October is the wettest, with 58 mm on about ten days.
Does it get hot at Giverny?
Sometimes. July and August each average about a dozen days of 25 °C or more. The record at Évreux is 40.9 °C, set on 25 July 2019.

Yes. Several listings say they run in all weather, so bring a waterproof. Rain falls on about one day in four through the season, going by the Évreux normals.
Is Giverny open in winter?
Monet's house and gardens are not: they close from 2 November to 31 March. The village itself stays open, but the tours to it run in the garden season only.
What time of day is best at the gardens?
Travellers who arrived at the 10 am opening found the gardens quietest. The queue for the house builds quickly, so several advise going to the house first and the pond after. Last admission is at 5.30 pm.
