What a Giverny Monet garden tour is
These are the half-days that go to Giverny and nowhere else. You leave Paris, spend two to three
hours at Monet's house and gardens and in the village, and come back the same afternoon. Monet
lived here for 43 years, from 1883 until his death in 1926, and made both gardens himself: the
flower garden in front of the house and, across the railway line, the water garden with its lilies
and green bridge.
The Fondation Claude Monet suggests an hour and a half to two hours for the house and gardens.
Most half-days give you that and a little more, for the village church, Monet's grave or a coffee.
Our page on the house and gardens, part by part shows what to look for in each room.
Why choose a Monet garden and house tour
All your time goes to Monet
A combination day gives the gardens about two hours and moves on. A Giverny-only day gives you
the whole outing, with nothing to hurry back for.
You can have a guide beside you in the gardens
The small groups of six and eight and the private days with a guide walk the flower garden and
the pond with you. The coach and the minivan from western Paris leave you to explore with an app
or on your own.
It fits into half a day
Four and a half to six hours on most, so you are back in Paris for the afternoon or the evening.
Only the bike day, with its picnic, runs to nine.
It runs every day of the season
The house and gardens open every day from 1 April to 1 November in 2026, Mondays included, so a
Giverny-only day fits a Monday when Versailles cannot.
Giverny-only half-days vs a combination day
The choice is time at Giverny against a second sight. Here is the difference in hours and
fares.
| Giverny-only half-day | With Versailles | With Auvers-sur-Oise |
|---|
| Length | 4.5 to 7 hours | 9 to 11.5 hours | 9 to 10 hours |
| Time at Giverny | 2 to 3 hours | 1 to 4 hours, about 2 on most | 2 to 3 hours |
| A guide in the gardens | On the small groups and private days | On some private days | Yes |
| Price a person | $80 to $1,275 | $158 to $928 | $250 to $575 |
| Closed days to watch | None in season | Mondays: the palace is shut | Mondays and Tuesdays: Van Gogh's room is shut |

If the gardens are the reason for your trip, take a Giverny-only day and give them your full
attention. If you have one day for everything, see the Giverny and Versailles tours or the Van Gogh days among the
Giverny day tours.
What you get, and what you don't
- The Monet ticket: in the fare on most of these days. The private half-day
with a licensed guide arranges pre-booked entry; the private day for three and the bike day have
the visit on the itinerary; the private driver day leaves the ticket out.
- A guide in the gardens: on the small groups from the 16th and avenue de
Wagram and on the private days with a guide. An app on the coach; nobody on the minivan from
western Paris.
- The village: free time on the coach, an hour on some private and small-group
days, and the church and grave on several.
- Food: never in the fare, and picnics are not allowed inside. The bike day
eats by the Seine before the visit.
A small group of eight with a guide in the gardens
Four and a half hours from avenue de Wagram: 90 minutes in the flower garden with your guide, the house and the pond, then Monet's grave. Monet ticket paid.

Planning a Giverny Monet house tour
- Budget: $80 a person on the coach, $147 to $255 in a shared minivan,
$138 on the bike day and $392 to $1,275 a person for a private half-day.
- When: spring for tulips and irises, summer for the water lilies, October for
autumn colour; our page on the best time to visit goes month by month.
- Bags: only a cabin-size bag, at most 55 x 35 x 20 cm, goes in, and there is
nowhere to leave a suitcase.
- Refunds: 24 hours ahead on most days. The private half-day with a licensed
guide cannot be refunded.
Our guide to choosing a tour weighs the guide, the group size and the pickup against each other.
Who should choose something else
- If you want two sights in one day. The Giverny and Versailles tours pair the gardens with the
palace.
- If you want to stay until the last entry. Every half-day sets its own time;
go by train and stay until 5.30 pm.
- If you want the lowest fare and no guide. The Giverny bus tours cost the least of all
and give you an app.
- If your visit is in winter. The house and gardens close from 2 November to 31
March, and so do these days.
Frequently asked questions
How long do you get at Monet's house and gardens on a tour?
Usually 2 to 3 hours in Giverny on a half day from Paris. The Fondation suggests an hour and a half to two hours for the house and gardens themselves. Days that add Versailles or Auvers-sur-Oise usually give Giverny about 2 hours.
How long is a Giverny-only tour?
Four and a half to six hours from Paris on most, and five to seven with hotel pickup. The bike day takes nine, because you cycle the last stretch and stop for a picnic.
Which Giverny half-days put a guide with you in the gardens?
The small groups of six and eight from the 16th and avenue de Wagram, and every private day with a guide or an art historian. The coach gives you an app, and the minivan from western Paris leaves you to explore on your own.
Do I need to book Monet's garden in advance?
It is not compulsory, but the Fondation recommends it, above all at weekends and on public holidays. Tickets also sell at the gate every day. An online ticket cannot be refunded, but you can change its date.
Can I bring a bag or a picnic?
Only a cabin-size bag, at most 55 x 35 x 20 cm, carried in your hand or on your back; there is no luggage storage. Picnics, painting, drawing and pets are not allowed in the house and gardens.
What time of day is best at the gardens?
Travellers who arrived at the 10 am opening found the gardens quietest. The queue for the house builds quickly, so several advise going to the house first and the pond after. Last admission is at 5.30 pm.
Is Giverny open in winter?
Monet's house and gardens are not: they close from 2 November to 31 March. The village itself stays open, but the tours to it run in the garden season only.
